Hello Menopause!

About

Night sweats waking you up again and again? You may fall right back asleep, but Dr. Hadine Joffe says those repeated interruptions do real damage, even if you’re in bed for eight hours. She tells Stacy how hot flashes set off a domino effect—first broken sleep and then low mood—and why fragmented sleep raises the long-term risk for heart disease and weight gain. She also explains how to tell the menopause “blues” from major depression and why that changes the treatment, and shares the options that work: hormone therapy, new non-hormonal medications, and CBT for insomnia. Dr. Hadine Joffe, MD, MSc, is Chair and Psychiatrist-in-Chief of the Department of Psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. She founded and directs the Women's Hormones and Aging Research Program at BIDMC's RHYME Research Center, where her work focuses on depression, insomnia, hot flashes, and fatigue in women going through menopause or breast cancer treatment. She has led NIH-funded research for more than 26 years and published over 200 studies. Hello Menopause is a podcast from Let’s Talk Menopause. Produced in partnership with Studio Kairos.
